ACH Information and Payment Instructions
What Is ACH?
ACH stands for “automated clearinghouse” and refers to a nationwide system used to electronically transfer money. When you send or receive funds through your bank or credit union, the ACH system works in the background to facilitate transfers between financial institutions.
What Is an ACH Payment?
An ACH payment is an electronic transfer of funds via the ACH system. This kind of payment moves money from one bank or credit union to another, using account and routing numbers.
When your electric company draws your monthly bill directly from your bank account, that’s an ACH payment.
How Do ACH Debits Work?
An ACH debit occurs when money is taken out of one account and sent to another account.
For example, consider your electric bill. Each month, you owe a certain amount to your electric company. Whether you’ve authorized the company to automatically subtract the money from your account each month or you manually make the payment before the due date, this is an ACH debit.
Benefits of ACH Payments
- Convenience: ACH transfers are convenient, allowing you to send and receive money through a simple electronic process. Using ACH to pay bills or receive direct deposits eliminates the need for writing or cashing checks or handing over money in person.
- Low or No Cost: Many banks offer free ACH transfers, and even the ones that charge a fee keep the costs low. This method of payment is cheaper than sending wire transfers, for example.
- Security: The ACH network is widely used and closely monitored, so you can feel confident in its safety. This method is more secure than handing someone a check, which can easily be misplaced.
